How to Calculate Aggregate for Medical Colleges in Pakistan — MDCAT Guide
Getting into a medical college in Pakistan is extremely competitive. Your admission depends on a weighted aggregate of your Matric marks, FSc marks, and MDCAT score. This guide explains the exact formula used by PMC (Pakistan Medical Commission) and how to calculate your merit.
The Medical College Merit Formula
Since PMC centralized medical admissions, the standard formula for public medical colleges is:
Aggregate = (Matric % × 0.10) + (FSc % × 0.40) + (MDCAT % × 0.50)
This is the same 10-40-50 weightage used across Pakistan for MBBS and BDS admissions in public sector medical colleges.
Step-by-Step Calculation
Step 1: Calculate Matric Percentage
Divide your obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100.
Example: 950 / 1100 × 100 = 86.36%
Use our Matric Calculator for quick calculation.
Step 2: Calculate FSc Percentage
Combine Part 1 and Part 2 marks. You must have FSc Pre-Medical (Biology, Physics, Chemistry).
Example: 920 / 1100 × 100 = 83.64%
Use our Inter Calculator to calculate this.
Step 3: Calculate MDCAT Percentage
The MDCAT is out of 210 marks (as per recent PMC format). Convert to percentage.
Example: 165 / 210 × 100 = 78.57%
Step 4: Apply the Formula
Aggregate = (86.36 × 0.10) + (83.64 × 0.40) + (78.57 × 0.50)
= 8.636 + 33.456 + 39.285
= 81.38%
MDCAT Test Structure
The Medical and Dental College Admission Test covers:
- Biology: 68 MCQs
- Chemistry: 58 MCQs
- Physics: 44 MCQs
- English: 20 MCQs
- Logical Reasoning: 20 MCQs
- Total: 210 MCQs in 3.5 hours
Note: PMC may update the test structure. Always check the official PMC website for the latest format.
Province-Wise Merit Cutoffs (Approximate)
Merit cutoffs vary by province and year. Recent approximate ranges for MBBS:
- Punjab (King Edward, Allama Iqbal): 88–93% aggregate
- Sindh (Dow, JSMU): 83–90%
- KPK (Khyber Medical): 85–90%
- Balochistan (Bolan Medical): 78–85%
- Federal (PIMS, SZABMU): 86–92%
BDS cutoffs are typically 3–8% lower than MBBS for the same college.
Private vs Public Medical Colleges
Private medical colleges also use MDCAT scores but may have lower merit cutoffs. However, fee structures are significantly higher:
- Public MBBS: PKR 50,000–150,000 per year
- Private MBBS: PKR 800,000–2,500,000 per year
Some private colleges have their own additional criteria or interviews beyond the standard aggregate.
Hafiz-e-Quran and Other Bonus Marks
Some provinces give additional marks for:
- Hafiz-e-Quran: 20 marks additional (varies by province)
- Disabled quota: Separate seats with potentially lower cutoffs
- Rural area quota: Available in some provinces
Check your province's admission policy for applicable bonuses.
Tips to Maximize Your Medical Aggregate
- MDCAT is king: At 50% weightage, this is where you can gain the most marks
- Start early: Begin MDCAT prep alongside your FSc Part 2 studies
- Focus on Biology: It has the most questions (68 MCQs) on the MDCAT
- FSc marks matter: 40% weightage means every mark in Inter counts
- Practice past papers: PMC releases sample papers — use them

Frequently Asked Questions
Is MDCAT mandatory for all medical colleges?
Yes, since PMC took over, MDCAT is mandatory for both public and private medical/dental colleges across Pakistan. No separate university tests are allowed.
Can I retake MDCAT?
Yes, you can attempt MDCAT in subsequent years. However, each year's score is only valid for that admission cycle. You cannot use a previous year's score.
Is the formula same for BDS?
Yes, the aggregate formula (10-40-50) is the same for both MBBS and BDS admissions. The difference is in merit cutoffs — BDS typically has lower cutoffs than MBBS.
Do Matric marks really matter for medical admissions?
While Matric only carries 10% weightage, in highly competitive admissions even 0.1% can make a difference. Every mark counts when thousands of students are competing for limited seats.
